EXHIBITIONS / Apropos
23.07.2015 to 22.08.2015
Jennifer Goodman’s practice has always explored spatial relationships, colour theory and the history of abstraction. Whilst she once observed a dedicated exploration of gridded abstractions in a multitude of variations, as her work evolved, she began to move away from the constraints of the grid and move towards a freer-form, allowing her shapes to intuitively move and bend, overlap and swerve.
In Goodman’s previous exhibition counter-current, each painting was developed with a companion piece which had a dialogue between the works, much like a call and response sequence in a musical composition. These works saw the artist cutting the ties which once held the grid in place, which has allowed the description of fragmented forms of colour to jostle and overlap in negative space.
While the small collages in Apropos reference Jennifer's recent paintings both in name and nature, some were developed as compositional and colour musings which later informed the canvases, while others were made in response to earlier completed works.
